Identifying Dental Issues

How do you know if your pet is experiencing a problem with his or her teeth, gums, or mouth? Here are the leading ways:

  • Bad breath (worse than normal "dog breath")
  • Excessive drooling
  • Weight loss
  • Poor coat condition, lack of self-grooming
  • Poor appetite
  • Sounds of pain when eating
  • Visible damage or bleeding from the mouth

What to Expect

During your pet's annual well-check, your veterinarian will inspect your pet's teeth, gums, and mouth to make sure there are no hidden or developing problems. If a problem is detected, a follow up appointment will be made to more closely assess the problem. This may require sedation in order to keep your pet calm and comfortable during the exam.

We recommend digital dental radiography for all of our dental patients. This highly specialized technology allows us to view any problems under the gum line, which may not be visible externally. If the veterinarian's exam reveals the need for more extensive dental work, it can either be done at that time or another appointment can be made depending on the needs of you and your pet.

Comfort and Pain Management

During any dental procedure your pet's comfort and safety are of the utmost importance to our staff. A highly skilled technician will monitor your pet while sedated, and pain is always well managed. All of our technicians have specialty continuing education certifications for veterinary dentistry. This allows them to stay on top of current trends and take the best possible care of your pet.

At-Home Dental Care

Talk to your veterinarian or one of our knowledgeable staff members about our home pet dental care products. We carry a full line of dog or cat toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as treats that actually remove plaque and reduce bacteria to help you keep their teeth healthy between checkups. Still, even with the best home care, problems can occur.
